Oriental Melody

  1. ORIENTAL MELODY - An acrylic painting on a 12 x 16 size canvas board, circa 1976. It is a spare time painting about the sound of music, and the difference between "sound" and "Sound Waves". And why a tree that falls in a forest never does make a "sound".

"Sound," is one of the secret wonders of nature. It exists only in the minds of living creatures. Like the secret of "electromagnetic waves" that carry radio and television programs silently through the air, you can't see or hear them without special equipment, like a radio or a television set. "Sound waves" also move silently through the air, but you can hear them because you do have special equipment, you have "ears".

The oriental lady in this picture is plucking the strings of her musical instrument, causing the air around it to undulate and move away in all directions, "silently." The music she is playing is hidden within those silent undulations, they are called "Sound Waves". And as they undulate through the air they weaken with distance until they flatten out and no longer exist.

If you have ears and are within range of sound waves, they will cause your eardrums to vibrate with the same frequency, causing the neurons in your ear canals to also undulate with the same frequency. Your ear canals are connected to your brain, so when those undulating neurons excite certain cells in your brain, the brain converts those silent undulations into the phenomenon called "sound". It is there that your mind "hears" the Oriental Melody.

Everything that has ever happened since the universe and time began, has happened, and continues to happen, in total silence. We are lucky to have ears and a brain that can convert and hear the "secret" in the silent sound waves. Can you imagine what life would be like for us if our brains were also able to hear and see the secret in those "electromagnetic waves"?

That possibility may only be a microchip implant away . . .
